Governing the plant life in a pond, or any body of water is quite critical. Why you say? Simple, since for some reason or another, you’ve chosen that you don’t desire it there. Whether those plants have generated a sort of hindrance for swimming children, or have just clogged up the engine on a favorite boat, you wish them gone, and there’s several ways to do this.
Of course you could use chemicals, plastic lining, freezing, manual pulling them up, or perhaps even dye, but those are mighty strenuous, and there is no guarantee that the pond, or even the fish, will actually be anywhere near what it was following such an effort. Therefore it’s about time to look into alternative means—techniques which will not damage you OR your pond.
Around nineteen sixty-three, a new fish was placed in the United States ecological, and this fish was called the Grass Carp. This fish was purposefully introduced into our ecosystem for the simple purpose of eliminating aquatic plant life, and thus far it has lived up to it’s reputation. Within the United States, A Grass Carp is often called a White Amur, presumably because of the fact that the word Carp holds negative meanings here in the U.S., and the word “Amur” is a reference to the river which the fish comes from, the river which runs the border between China and Russia.
The Grass Carp, is what is known as an invasive species, meaning that it’ll reproduce and take over any ecosystem that it is placed in (similar to humans), however science has progressed a long way, and though it required some time, and a lot of gene manipulation, sterilizing the Grass Carp became standard procedure all over the world so that the integration doesn’t harm or eradicate the local ecology.
An additional detail to take into account, is the fact that the Grass Carp doesn’t consume every kind of grass, of course it enjoys plants, and would consume the vast majority of it, but just like humans, there are things that it prefers more than others. A few of the items which the Grass Carp will like, are:
Coontail
Spikerush
Smartweed
Bladderwort
Bulrush
Water hyssop
Eelgrass
There are many additional grasses, and a visit to a library, a web query, or a consultation with an expert would quickly reveal the things a grass carp will consume.
When purchased in large amounts, Grass Carp is fairly cheap, at about $10-20 for each fish, which is perfectly reasonable considering how long it’ll last; living for around ten to eleven years.
In some states, you will need to get a license before you place Grass Carp in any sort of water, whether it is owned by you. To discover if that’s necessary, talk to a game warden near you, or simply check the laws of your state, since that information is readily accessible to any person who requires it.
Clearly, Grass Carp are an excellent alternate means from using chemical compounds, or lining your pond with plastic, because not just are these perfect for ridding you of undesired plant life, you should also remember that this is an interdependent relationship, you give the thing they desire, and in return they give a service to you, keeping you from needing to do it on your own. All in all, that’s a good trade.
