Depending on how old your home is, you may have wallpaper on your walls. This was once a really great way to decorate a home. However, it is not as popular as it once was and is rarely enjoyed much anymore. This is especially true if you are living in an older home and the wallpaper is outdated and faded. You may be considering painting over the wallpaper but you are not sure where to begin or how to prepare to make sure that the paint does not look likes its covering up wallpaper. Try following these simple tips and tricks:
1) You will want to start by wiping off of the wallpaper. This will ensure that you get all of the dust and dirt off of the walls.
2. Any loose pieces of paper should be removed from the wall enabling a smooth surface to be created.
3. Using a piece of 200 grade sandpaper the wall should be rubbed where the old wallpaper was as it helps to get rid of the wallpaper glue and once this is done painting over the paper will be made so much easier.
4) Purchase primer and paint the walls with this first. You may need to do this a few times. It is best to take your time with this part so that you are sure you are covering any and all patterns on the walls. This will help your final result be a success when you are finished.
5. When you are making a decision about which primer to buy, think about the paint you are using. For example, the primer will need to be oil based if you are using oil based top coat on the walls.
By taking heed of this advice and thinking about the particular job in hand, painting over wallpapered walls can be very successful. However, in your haste to cover the existing wallpaper, don’t forget the paint colour you select has to be the best choice for the room too.
